FAQ's- Micro Needling
What is Micro-Needling?
Micro-Needling Is an exciting and effective treatment which produces dramatic changes in wrinkled and photo-aged skin. Our Micro Needling device (Rejuvapen) causes multiple tiny pin-point punctures to the deeper layers of your skin. This dermal injury starts the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. It also creates micro-channels, to infuse anti-aging serums deeper into the skin for greater overall effects. The Rejuvapen Automatic Therapy System utilizes 9 precisely spaced micro needles in a small cartridge to create invisible, vertical, microperforations into the epidermis and the top layer of the dermis. As a result, the skin shifts its natural repair system into high gear and starts producing collagen and elastin to repair these micro perforations. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out. The advantage of the Rejuvapen compared to other treatments is that it not only activates cell regeneration, it also enhances the absorption of active ingredients of RP Complex into the skin during the treatment before the skin closes. Your skin becomes firmer and regains its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced, pores become finer, circulation is stimulated and the overall condition of the skin improves.
Let's go a little more in depth...
The top layer of the skin is called the epidermis and ranges in thickness depending on location on the body. The dermis is the middle layer of skin and lies just below the epidermis. The soles of the feet have the thickest dermis. The dermis of the eyelids is very thin. In order to trigger collagen production, the dermis must be reached. Therefore, different depths must be reached, dependent on the area of the body being treated, to get the best penetration of the dermis and the best results.
Micro-needling uses very short, very thin needles to make channels in the skin. This starts new growth of collagen and elastin which can continue as long as a year after treatment! Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure. It works with elastin like a netting to hold skin cells together. We have lots of collagen while we are young. It gives us our smooth, youthful appearance. As we age, collagen starts to break down, skin thins, and we develop fine lines and wrinkles. Elastin is another skin protein. It helps skin return to its original position after it is stretched or contracted. As we age, elastin is made more slowly than when we are young. The loss of these proteins and the resulting structural changes are the reason mature skin takes longer to go back to its original position when stretched or pulled.
Along with collagen and elastin in the dermis, hyaluronic acid (the glue that holds elastin and collagen in place) changes as we age. As early as in our forties, this acid starts to decrease, also causing decreased elasticity in our skin. Micro-needling allows reintroduction of hyaluronic acid through microscopic channels so that it can penetrate the skin making it more plump and firm. These changes, induced by micro-needling, result in your skin’s thickness being increased by up to 40%.
Changes in skin color are mostly caused by aging and sun exposure. When your skin is pierced with the needles of the micro-needling pen, some of the skin cells are damaged. Those cells are too damaged to function and our bodies immediately start removing the damaged cells and replacing them with new cells. So micro-needling reduces areas of hyper- and hypo-pigmentation, age spots, etc., by speeding up skin turnover.
Scar Reduction and Stretch Marks
Scar tissue is not that different from normal skin. It is, however, very different in its appearance. Scars have large amounts of collagen, but the collagen in a scar is thick and woven in a different pattern than that of normal skin. Our bodies fix things that are broken. Scar tissue, while not attractive, is seen by the body as normal. Micro-needling of a scar forces the body to remodel the scar and trigger a healing response. Our bodies won’t replace the scar tissue completely, especially if the scar is deep; but it will replace the parts that are injured by micro-needling. This creates a mixture of scar tissue and normal tissue and results in a smoother, better looking, and softer scar. Indented scars fill and raised scars flatten. It does not work in all cases; but in most people, it does work. Additionally, needling a hypo-pigmented scar will cause migration of pigment producing cells from the surrounding skin into the scar, improving its color.
BENEFITS OF MICRO NEEDLING
A series of sessions have been shown to:
*Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
*Minimize pore size
*Reduce acne scarring
*Lifts, tightens and rejuvenates skin
*Improves stretch marks
*Improves the appearance of scars
How can adding Growth Factors to my treatment help?
Micro Needling is going to work well if we apply peptide gel or human growth factors to the skin. The Human growth factors have been known to modulate inflammation, promote healing and reduce pigment and wrinkles even faster and more efficiently. The results have been of greater significance when used in micro needling.
How often do I need to have it done?
Best results are achieved in 4 sessions, In some instances it may take 6 sessions. Sessions are spaced 3 weeks apart. Patients will want to come in for 1 session every 3-4 months in order to keep their skin looking great.
Is there any downtime?
After your treatment there is going to be redness similar to a bad sunburn. As the days go on, the redness starts to subside. Everyone is different when it comes to healing, but each day it gets less and less red. Here is the BEST part. There is virtually no downtime due to a product that we sell called Oxygenetix. This medicated breathable concealer with SPF is a very good product. When you apply the Oxygenetix, the redness will be hidden and the skin will calm down due to the medicated aspect of the product. You will walk out of the office and go out into the world looking like you haven't had anything done. As you have more micro needle treatments, the healing gets easier due to the fact that the skin becomes healthier.
